Spellmonger (Lazy Review #31)

Book cover for the title Spellmonger

Medieval story with knights, goblins, mages and castles.

Min is the archetypal character who retired due to an arrow in the knee. He lives in peace as a spellmonger in a village. He peddles magic just like any tradesman. And he even has an apprentice to order about. Life is good until a goblin army comes to ruin everything.

Review: (Spellmonger)

Minalan is a smart wizard who isn’t afraid of large amounts of alcohol. He likes women and has no problem getting his hands dirty when fighting. Fair warning: a lot is lusting after women in the series overall. This also includes a sex-positive female wizard who researches sex magic. With this knowledge, do what you will. Now, on to the magic. I like it for the most part. It has a strong set of rules and defined limits. Which makes the workarounds Minalan, the spellmonger, comes up with clever and interesting. This is the basic good vs. evil plot. Evil goblins invade, and the good guys have to survive. There are hints that the bad guys have some justification, but that isn’t the focus.

My Opinion

It’s a good book. I recommend it. It’s action-focused, so the pacing is quick. It is a considerable time investment, though. If you like long epic series like The Wheel of time, you’ll enjoy this.

Will I check out more from this series or author after this lazy review?
