A Lazy Review of A Summoner Awakens: Origins: (A Deck Building LitRPG)

Quick Summary:

An old man dies and is sent back to the past. He uses his future knowledge to change certain events and to gain advantages over others. His second chance allows him to discover secrets about the world and himself that he never knew. As of now, the book is more gamelit than anything else. However, I did enjoy the magic system and the cards.

  1. Will I remember any of the story or Characters after reading this?
    • The main character (Rowan) feels like a pretty solid lead. He’s active and uses his future knowledge to good effect. The only other character that stood out to me was the main antagonist, despite the fact that he didn’t really do much. I wish there were more POVs that explored his thought process.
  1. Was there anything that took away from my enjoyment of the story?
    • Rowan is a regressor. Someone who has lived an entire life before being sent back in time in order to get a second chance. I’ve read a lot of stories with that as the main plot point. One thing that always frustrated me was the fact that in every other story, the main character (MC) shows no signs of living the previous life. They just perfectly adapt to their situation. In this novel, the MC was an old man before he got the chance to do everything over again. Rowan doesn’t perfectly adjust to his new situation and still acts like an old man while still being in a younger body. It was funny at first. But it got old quick. Attention was brought to this quirk of the MC repeatedly throughout the entire novel.
  1. Am I going to check out more from this series or author?
    • I will definitely be on the lookout for more from this author. The writing was solid. The magic system was interesting. Magical cards, sentient summons, and a bit of Litrpg. The next book in the series comes out on 12/19/2023.
